Attendees at the celebration of Sherlock Holmes’s 123rd birthday enjoyed not only “the excellent roast-beef dinner,” but, even more importantly, the enduring “reunions with Irregulars from all over the country.” Despite inclement weather, “[n]one of [the] rites and ceremonies was omitted.” Amy (Mrs. Owen P.) Frisbie was toasted as <i>The</i> Woman. A record twenty one Investitures were bestowed in 1977.<br />

More than 150 revelers gathered at the Regency to celebrate the 122nd anniversary of Sherlock Holmes’s birth, taxing “the walls of our meeting place beyond its capacity.” This joyous occasion saw the designation of “<i>The</i> Woman” bestowed upon Rosemary (Mrs. Edward F.) Clark and the presentation of “unusually good” scholarly papers. Ten Investitures were awarded. Among those receiving the Irregular Shilling were Isaac Asimov, Otto Penzler, and Jack Tracy.<br />

While an undergraduate at Yale College, Glen Miranker (The Origin of Tree Worship, 1991) assisted Dr. David Musto in reviving the Bull Pups of Yale. Glen graduated <i>summa cum laude</i> from Yale College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. He holds both Masters (1977) and Doctor of Philosophy (1979) degrees in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  On graduation, Glen worked for IBM and taught graduate courses as an adjunct professor at Columbia University. In 1981, he and his wife Cathy relocated to the Bay Area, where he joined a Sunnyvale start-up company.  Glen was invited by Steve Jobs to join Next Computer in 1990 and Apple Computer in 1996. For most of his tenure at Apple, he ran hardware development and served as Apple’s Chief Technology Officer (Hardware), retiring in 2004.<br />
<br />
In 1976, his wife Cathy gave him his first collectible book, <i>The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes</i>.  He was invested into The Friends of Irene Adler In 1979, the Speckled Band of Boston in 1981, and the BSI in 1991.  In 2004, Glen joined the board of the BSI Trust and served as its Co-Chair from 2005-2008.  Long a bibliophile, he now devotes himself to book collecting, lecturing and assisting special-collections departments and boards at such institutions as the Houghton Library of Harvard University, the Toronto Reference Library, the Harry Ransom Center, and the Newberry Library, among others. He also collects and lectures on the history of cryptography and is a director of the National Cryptologic Foundation.<br />
<br />
Glen has donated hundreds of BSI related historical correspondence and other items to the Trust’s collection, and he is the recipient of the Trust’s Benefactor’s Award. <br />

The cocktail hour that introduced Sherlock Holmes’s 121st birthday festivities featured as esteemed guests actors John Wood and Mel Martin, who portrayed, respectively, Sherlock Holmes and Alice Faulkner in William Gillette’s play, Sherlock Holmes. Princess Nina Mdivani Harwood (the widow of Denis Conan Doyle and daughter-in-law of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) was honored as <i>The</i> Woman. The Dinner also marked Fred Dannay’s (half of Ellery Queen) return.  There were 147 attendees. Rev. Leslie Marshall’s delivery of Sherlock Holmes’s Prayer was especially notable during the proceedings. There was Canonical music, followed by Standing on the Terrace for those who had dropped from the ranks, the introductions of a large number of first-timers, and the awarding of Honours to those who had served the cause well. After several scholarly papers, brief reports from the Scion Societies were given.  Julian Wolff called the 1975 meeting “probably the best ever.”<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 120th birthday was celebrated by 124 Irregulars and guests with “even more than the usual conviviality.” All Irregular rites were observed. Dorothy (Mrs. John Bennett) Shaw was honored as <i>The</i> Woman. Those present stood on the terrace to remember departed Irregulars.  Papers were delivered by Bruce Kennedy. Alastair Martin, Will Oursler, and John Bennett Shaw, “all of whom excelled.” Nine Investitures were given.  The Scion Society reports concluded the formal programme, after which there was some Irregular revelry and discussion.<br />

The Baker Street Irregulars celebrated the 119th birthday of Sherlock Holmes at The Regency Hotel.  The Commissionaire, Julian Wolff, intended to present the Sherlock Holmes silver medal to Mr. Rafael Sevilla-Sacasa (Director of the Philatelic Bureau of the Republic of Nicaragua) for his services in keeping the memory of the Master green by the issuance of the first official Sherlock Holmes stamp.  Unfortunately, Mr. Sevilla-Sacasa was unable to be present due to a severe earthquake in his country. The medal was awarded to him in absentia.  In his place, Mr. Jeff Oakden, of the Crown Agents, delivered a short address.  All of the BSI’s traditions were observed, beginning with the first Conanical toast to <i>The</i> Woman, Ines (Mrs. William S.) Hall, whose late husband was one of the founders of the BSI. Newcomers were introduced. Jim Montgomery’s songs were played, and papers of unusually high calibre were delivered by Will Oursler, Bruce Kennedy, John Bennett Shaw, and John Linsenmeyer.  Six Investitures were awarded at the Dinner.  The BSI, through a small committee headed by James Nelson, presented a special golden sovereign to the Commissionaire, who wrote that he intended to wear it on his watch-chain in memory of the occasion.<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 118th birthday was celebrated by “a record attendance of 130” at the Regency Hotel. All Irregular rites were observed. 11 Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Dorothy (Mrs. Herbert) Brean was honored as <i>The</i> Woman. Papers of “the highest quality” were delivered by esteemed speakers, including Tom McDade, Tom Stix (Sr.), Will Oursler, Bill Jenkins, Herb Brean, John Ball, and John Bennett Shaw.  Thoughtful members, such as Fred Dannay, Peter Blau, and Ira Wolff, contributed “keepsakes” for the enjoyment and edification of all.<br />

Peter E. Blau (Black Peter, 1959) found the world of Sherlockians as a teenager, thanks to Ben Abramson, who wrote "I publish a magazine you will enjoy reading.  Tell your father to send me $10.00."  The magazine was <i>The Baker Street Journal</i>, and it offered a wonderful introduction to people who enjoyed playing a game that was as fascinating then as it is now.  He received his Investiture ("Black Peter") in The Baker Street Irregulars in 1959, went on to become an early informal member of The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes (barred at the time from attending their annual dinner), and a member of many other Sherlockian societies.  He sometimes claims that everything he knows about being a Sherlockian and a collector he learned from John Bennett Shaw, and is happy to be the "Simpson" (secretary) of the BSI, as was John before him.  He has edited and published an informal newsletter <i>Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press</i> since the early 1970s, and has been published widely in other Sherlockian journals.  His career as a geologist and a journalist has allowed him to travel widely and meet a host of interesting and entertaining Sherlockians, and to indulge in his favorite pastime: telling stories, some of which you can listen to in his oral history.<br />
<br />
He received the Two-Shilling award in 1980.  Peter is one of America’s great storytellers, raconteurs, Sherlockians, and collectors. His interview is filled with other Sherlockians, Sherlockian historical insight, amazing acquisitions, and great fun.<br />

“100 thirsty enthusiasts,” in Commissionaire Julian Wolff’s inimitable words, commemorated Sherlock Holmes’s 118th birthday at the Players Club. This auspicious evening featured several worthy guests, including Alfred Drake, President of the Players, “whose address revealed him to be a real Sherlockian scholar”; Brooks Atkinson, the famed <i>New York Times</i> theatre critic; Fred Dannay (one half of Ellery Queen); and the Reverend Leslie Marshall, who demonstrated that “the stage had lost a fine actor when he entered the ministry.”<br />
<br />
All Irregular rites and customs were “strictly observed.” Dorothy (Mrs. Thomas L., Jr.) Stix was honored as <i>The</i> Woman. Five new Irregulars received their Investitures.  Fred Dannay generously supplied each of those present with the February issue of the <i>Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine</i>, a tradition that still continues today. Attendees stood on the terrace to have their “last quiet talk with those Irregulars” who had crossed over the Reichenbach in the past year. The close relationship between the Irregulars and the Players was appropriately dissected. In fitting style, John Bennett Shaw delivered “a most amusing talk…showing evidence of much research and truly specialized knowledge, but, unfortunately, unpublishable.”<br />

The celebrations of Sherlock Holmes’s 116th birthday were held this year at the Players Club,  “the club of many present-day and old-time Sherlockians—among them Frederic Dorr Steele, Christopher Morley, and Basil Rathbone. The most appropriate and delightful atmosphere contributed much to the great success of the occasion.”<br />
<br />
Proper attention was paid to all Irregular rites and rituals. Molly (Mrs. Howard) Haycraft was honored by Tom Stix (Sr.) as <i>The</i> Woman. Five Irregulars were invested. Attendees then “stood on the terrace to recall…our last quiet talks with several faithful Irregulars.” The papers of the evening demonstrated “the usual high calibre” that has come to typify this yearly tradition.<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 115th birthday was “an even greater success than usual,” so Julian Wolff’s Commissionaire’s Report reads. All Canonical rites, including the Canonical and Irregular toasts, Sherlockian musical performances, and the recitation of the Musgrave Ritual and Sherlock Holmes’s Prayer were diligently performed.  Ceil (Mrs. William S.) Baring-Gould was honored as <i>The</i> Woman.<br />
<br />
Tribute was paid to Sherlockians who had passed away over the preceding year. Ten Irregulars were invested. After judges James Nelson, H.W. Starr, and Rex Stout deliberated, Lew Feldman awarded the Morley-Montgomery Award to Poul Anderson (eleven years after Anderson first won in the award’s first year of existence). Feldman then exhibited before the assembled what the Commissionaire fittingly characterized as “the Dead Sea Scroll” of Sherlockian relics: the manuscript notes made by Sir Arthur before A Study in Scarlet was written.<br />
<br />
A special award, The Queen Victoria Medal, was given “For Outstanding Contributions to the Quartering of The Union Jack with The Stars and Stripes” to Lord Donegall (<i>in absentia</i>) and Lew D. Feldman.<br />
<br />
The evening concluded with reports, speeches (Will Oursler, John Bennett Shaw, Nathan Bengis, and Lyttleton Fox), and performances of the first order, including a demonstration of magicianship by John Mulholland, “the very same exhibition of his art that had baffled Sir Arthur himself.”<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 114th birthday is possibly best known for an historic event that happened outside of the Dinner.  During the cocktail hour that preceded the Dinner, six young women from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut picketed the BSI in front of Cavanagh’s restaurant for not allowing women into the Dinner.  When Julian Wolff heard about the picketing, he said to John Bennett Shaw and Peter Blau (with whom the women had corresponded), “Your damned girls are at the door. Do something!"  Shaw and Blau invited the women into the downstairs bar where the women composed a manifesto to be read to the BSI.  "Gentlemen' this is it! We have long been distressed by your apparent reluctance to admit ladies into the BSI. In order to bring our opinion to your attention we have come here through the bitter chill of winter to ask you to reconsider and bow to the feminine influence. It is not for ourselves that we have come—oh, no! it is for those lovers of Sherlock Holmes everywhere (he did get around a lot). In conclusion, we hope that when you are choosing new members you will give equal consideration to the feminine Irregulars." When read to the BSI, the manifesto was met with a deafening silence.  However, the young women went on to form The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes, which became a national Sherlockian organization and still thrives today.<br />
<br />
The dinner, itself, was marked by “capacity attendance,” Julian Wolff’s Commissionaire’s Report notes. All Canonical rites, including the Irregular toasts, Sherlockian musical performances, and the recitation of the Musgrave Ritual and Sherlock Holmes’ Prayer, were closely observed. Regine (Mrs. Thomas L.) Stix (Sr.) was toasted as <i>The </i>Woman. Tributes were paid to Sherlockian luminaries who had recently passed, such as William S. Baring Gould and Basil Rathbone. After judges H.W. Starr and James Nelson awarded the 10th annual Morley-Montgomery Award to William Baring-Gould’s “Mrs. Hudson’s Inheritance,” the impresario behind the $100 check, Lew. D. Feldman, was honored for his support of this prize by being named “Guest of the Irregulars.”<br />
<br />
Seven Irregulars were invested. The Commissionaire, who during the course of the evening was “surprised and flattered—and delighted” to receive the Two-Shilling Award, closes his account with the estimation that “this was one of the best dinner-meetings we have ever had.”<br />

An unfortunate milestone marked Sherlock Holmes’s 113th birthday: Rex Stout, the long-time master of ceremonies, was unable to be present. Nonetheless, the timely and timeless Sherlockian rituals and rites “were meticulously carried out.” There were the “Conanical” and the Irregular toasts, readings of the Constitution and Buy-Laws, the Musgrave Ritual, Sherlock Holmes’s prayer, and Irregular music. Missives from Sherlockian individuals and societies from around the world, including messages from Adrian Conan Doyle and the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, were read aloud. Peggy (Mrs. James) Nelson was toasted by William Baring-Gould as <i>The </i>Woman. Four new Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Three papers of “unusually high calibre” were delivered by John McCabe, John Bennett Shaw, and H.W. Starr, and the festivities concluded with “much Sherlockian discussion.”<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 112th Birthday celebration took place against the backdrop of a New York transit strike. But, Sherlockians are undaunted. The dinner enjoyed “a near-record attendance,” including visitors from California, Illinois, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Pola (Mrs. Rex) Stout was honored by Tom McDade as <i>The</i> Woman. Canonical and Irregular toasts were offered, and Scion reports from around the world were delivered. Three Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Near the evening’s closing, the master of ceremonies, Rex Stout, received a “unique” award, The Order of the Blue Carbuncle. Tom Stix (Sr.) and Herbert Brean delivered learned papers, followed by toasts and disputations to round out the evening.<br />

Julian Wolff’s summary of the 111th Birthday Dinner records that “once more the attendance record was broken; 89 of the faithful were present.” Overseen by Rex Stout and chaired by Tom Stix (Sr.), all proper and improper festivities and rituals were observed. Eleanor Cryan (Mrs. Julian) Wolff was honored as <i>The </i>Woman. Canonical and Irregular toasts were proffered, and Bruce Montgomery delighted attendees with a sequel to his father’s established musical masterpiece, “Aunt Clara.” Ten Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Dr. Marvin Aronson and Herbert Brean delivered papers. Subsequently, reports and addresses from Scions worldwide were delivered aloud.<br />

A record 84 attendees gathered to commemorate Sherlock Holmes’s 110th Birthday.  After Lisa McGaw had been toasted as “<i>The</i> Woman,” Rex Stout called the assembly to order. Departed members were memorialized, and messages of greetings from absent members and Sherlockian societies at home and abroad were acknowledged.  It was announced that the late Jay Finley Christ had received the highest Irregular honour, the Two-Shilling Award, in November.  An unusual award, “a medal as large as a soup plate,” was presented to one of the waiters for long and faithful service. (“They also serve who only stand and wait.”) Irregular Shillings with Investitures were bestowed upon seven new members.<br />
<br />
It was announced that Edward F. Clark, Jr. had won the Morley-Montgomery Award. Herbert Brean then presented a vivid and hilarious account of the difficulties encountered by two budding authors (Poe and Doyle) in their attempts to break into print. The Five Orange Pips Quiz was next on the agenda. The formal part of the programme ended with Lord Donegall's message from the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and the reports of our Scion Societies.<br />

Seventy two guests attended the festivities commemorating Sherlock Holmes’s 109th Birthday, under Rex Stout’s direction. Irregular tradition carried the evening: the Constitution and Buy-Laws were read aloud; the four Canonical toasts and the four Irregular toasts (to Edgar W. Smith, Christopher Morley, James Montgomery and Sherlock Holmes) were proffered; and Sherlock Holmes’s prayer, the Musgrave Ritual, Readings from the Writings, and the Challenge in the Canon were all satisfactorily delivered. Five new members were invested.<br />
<br />
The absence due to illness of the Marquis of Donegall, of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, was regretfully noted. S. Tupper Bigelow saw his proverbial cup runneth over when, in addition to securing the Morley-Montgomery Award for best article published in the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> the previous year, he won a token from the Journal’s editor for the “physical excellence of his manuscripts.” William Baring-Gould, “author of one of the most remarkable books ever penned,” was given the Irregular Two-Shilling Award. The evening closed with reports from Scion societies, the expected intellectual disputation, and the news that a testimonial dinner to Vincent Starrett is scheduled to take place that March in Chicago.<br />
