Evelyn Herzog (The Daintiest Thing Under a Bonnet, 1991) saved her tooth fairy money to obtain a copy of <i>The</i> <i>Complete Sherlock Holmes</i>.  That book became the foundation upon which she attracted a group of other college students at Albertus Magnus College to meet and discuss the Sherlock Holmes stories. Precocious young women, they wrote to William S. Baring-Gould, John Bennett Shaw, <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a>, Ted Schulz, and others and developed ongoing correspondence with them.  While still in high school, Evy learned that (at that time) the Baker Street Irregulars did not admit women to its dinners.  While in college, she and her cohorts still considered it an injustice, and, being the 1960s, they picketed the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1968-bsi-dinner.html">1968 BSI Dinner</a>.<br />
<br />
That eventually led to the founding of the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes, of which she is still “The Principal Unprincipled Adventuress.”  Evy was invested in the BSI among the six women (including Susan Rice) whom Tom Stix invested at the memorable <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1991-bsi-dinner.html">1991 BSI Cocktail Party</a> which finally fully opened the BSI to women.  She has been a notable Sherlockian and an important figure in American Sherlockian history.<br />
<br />
Along the way, she has met many memorable Sherlockians.  She is expertly interviewed by Susan Rice, and she talks about the many people she has known and the events she not only witnessed, but participated in, and, sometimes, initiated.<br />

The Queen Victoria Medal

The Winter issue of the 1967 <i>Baker Street Journal</i> included an item on page 250 that said:<br />
<br />
“A giant stride toward the quartering of the Union Jack with the Stars and Stripes occurred in October when Colin Prestige (“Captain Crocker” - or “Croker” as it is in the English editions), Hon. Secretary of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, paid an eventful visit to this country. In New York he was honoured at two small gatherings, a cocktail party and a luncheon, and he was presented with a newly-created Irregular award, the Victoria Medal, for his contributions to the quartering referred to at the beginning of this paragraph. The medal is silver and was produced by the Royal Mint in 1897 to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.”<br />
<br />
Thus, Julian Wolff gave to Colin Prestige the very first Queen Victoria Medal awarded by the BSI. Others would receive it through the years.  Two of them would receive it twice!  The Medal was not only awarded for promoting British-American relations, but was also given to both men and women who deserved it for devotion to duty.  The recipients have been:<br />

The Medals were not usually awarded at the BSI Dinner, but, rather, at other events, including the Saturday Cocktail Reception during the BSI Weekend, Silver Blaze Race in New York, Sherlockian Dinners at the Culinary Institute of America, John Bennett Shaw’s workshop, and other venues.<br />
<br />
Dorothy Stix relates that the reason she received her second Medal was because Julian Wolff forgot that he had given her the first one.  Of course, both were well deserved.<br />
<br />
The BSI Trust is grateful to Dorothy Stix who donated her Queen Victoria Medals (including the one shown in the photos above) to the Trust in 2017.<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 162nd birthday was feted by an enthusiastic group, also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1991-bsi-dinner.html"> opening of the BSI to women</a>. <br />
<br />
Mike Whelan (the BSI's "Wiggins") honored Tony Montag for his more than fifty years as an Irregular. He also recognized others in attendance with Irregular longevity, including <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a>, Albert Silverstein, <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/04/russell-merritt-interview-oral-history.html">Russell Merritt</a>, George McCormack, Chris Redmond, and James Saunders.<br />
<br />
Julia Rosenblatt toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Marilynne McKay gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  Sally Sugarman had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Catherine Cooke toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Marino Alvarez led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.  Bob Coghill gave a toast to an Old Irregular, Maureen Green Van der Flaes.  Tony Montag read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.<br />
<br />
Bert Coules gave an account of Holmes on the radio in the 1930s, a tribute to Edith Meiser.   Peter Blau and Evelyn Herzog gave a "Duet: With an Occasional Chorus" account of the role of women in the BSI from 1934 to the present (which concluded with the singing - for the first time at an annual Dinner of the BSI - of the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes' "Reindeer Song").  Susan Rice gave a presentation on the rational roots of Holmes's feelings about women. As usual, Henry Boote, at the piano, led the musical entertainment.  Susan Dahlinger provided a marvelous rendition of a song from The Seven Per-Cent Solution film, as Nicholas Meyer was in attendance.  Betsy Rosenblatt did a great job singing "At Last," and Henry Boote charmed us with the singing of his own original composition, both celebrating women in the BSI. Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">“Standing upon the Terrace”</a> ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. <br />
<br />
Seven deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Nancy Browning was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html"><i>The</i> Woman</a>.  Tom Francis (former Chairman of the BSI Trust) received the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty.  Mike Whelan also appointed two more officers of the BSI: Michael Kean (as "Cartwright") and Bob Katz (as "Billy the Page").<br />
<br />
The evening concluded with Peter Crupe reciting Vincent Starrett’s poem “221B.”<br />
<br />
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities. <br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 161st birthday was celebrated with great mirth, scholarly presentations, toasts, and memorable moments. <br />
<br />
Burt Wolder toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Jacquelynn Morris gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  John Baesch had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Hartley Nathan toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Marsha Pollak led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />
<br />
Raymond Betzner spoke movingly on the real reason that Holmes returned to London after the hiatus. Michael Dirda spoke on Langdale Pike's participation in the Civil War and other important events. Harrison Hunt celebrated the quasquicentennial anniversary of an event, without which, there would be no BSI. David Stuart Davies delivered his one-man play about the four <i>Ms </i>and the poison hedgehog.  Lou Lewis read the BSI’s Constitution and Buy-Laws.  As usual, Henry Boote led the musical entertainment.  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Standing upon the Terrace</a>” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. <br />
<br />
Eight deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Inez Bergquist was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html"><i>The</i> Woman</a>.  Mary Ann Bradley received the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty. Mike Whelan presented the BSI's “Tip of the Deerstalker Awards” to Marsha Pollak, Ralph Hall, George McCormack, and Jim Saunders.<br />
<br />
The evening concluded with SJ Rozan reciting William Schweickert’s “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">A Long Evening with Holmes</a>.”<br />
<br />
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities. <br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 160th birthday also marked the 80th birthday of the BSI.  It was celebrated with tri-colored cupcakes that matched Holmes’s dressing gown (blue, purple, and mouse) and after-dinner brandy. <br />
<br />
Mike Berdan toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Theodora (Teddie) Niver gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/12/glen-miranker-interview-oral-history.html">Glen Miranker</a> had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Mark Levy toasted Sherlock Holmes.   David Houle led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />
<br />
Jan Burke spoke on the forensic nature of Holmes’s work.  Judge Albert Rosenblatt led a debate among Andrew Fusco, Leslie Klinger, Lou Lewis, John Linsenmeyer, Andrew Peck, and Betsy Rosenblatt on whether to amend the BSI’s Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Sonia Fetherston spoke of an Old Irregular, Bliss Austin. Henry Boote led the musical presentation. Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “Standing upon the Terrace” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost.<br />
<br />
Seven deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Marilyn Nathan was toasted as <i>The</i> Woman. Randall Stock received the Two-Shilling Award for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty. Les Klinger was awarded the Edgar W. Smith Intrepid Irregular Award for his role on behalf of the public domain status of Sherlock Holmes <i>qua</i> literary character and all other canonical characters and events that currently exist in the public domain in the United States.  Mike Whelan presented the BSI's “Tip of the Deerstalker Awards” to Andy Peck, Mitch Higurashi, Susan Rice, Don Curtis, and Maggie Schpak<br />

The evening concluded with Evelyn Herzog reciting Vincent Starrett’s “221B.”<br />

Sherlock Holmes’s 159th birthday was marked with erudite presentations, heartfelt toasts, and, above all, the enduring Sherlockian camaraderie that underpins and infuses every gathering in celebration of the Master.  The theme of the evening was celebrating past BSI leaders.<br />

Given the theme of the evening, (almost) all of the presentations were about former heads of the BSI. Steven Rothman spoke on the life of Christopher Morley.  Gregory Darak spoke on Edgar W. Smith.  Peter Blau reminisced about Julian Wolff.  Susan Rice and Evelyn Herzog talked about Tom Stix, Jr.  Russell Merritt then spoke on the many faces of Moriarty in early films.  Julie McKuras spoke of an old Irregular, former University of Minnesota Librarian and <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> holder, Errett Weir McDiarmid, Jr.  Henry Boote and Lyndsay Faye presented a musical tribute to characters from “The Copper Beeches” and “A Scandal in Bohemia.”  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">“Standing upon the Terrace”</a> ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. <br />

The dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 158th birthday was another evening of recognition, celebration, and scholarship.  The dinner's theme was "His Last Bow" in celebration of the centenary of the beginning of Holmes's involvement in the case.  Wiggins (Michael Whelan) began the evening by lauding the large number of presentations that the BSI has published over the previous decade. <br />
<br />
Lyndsay Faye toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Andrew Solberg gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  James Saunders had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Donald Novorsky toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Costantine Rossakis read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Vincent Brosnan led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />
<br />
As the dinner's theme was "His Last Bow," Burt Wolder, Robert Katz, and Barbara Rusch all gave related presentations.  Paul Singleton and Scott Monty gave a Sherlockian rendition of the Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks “2,000 Year Old Man” (who sounded very much like <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a>).  Otto Penzler spoke of tales of book selling and sellers, including the old Irregular Lew David Feldman.  Henry Boote led us in singing the BSI’s anthem, “Aunt Clara.”  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Standing upon the Terrace</a>” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. <br />

The dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 157th birthday was an evening of recognition, celebration, and scholarship.  There was a distinct “Knoxian” theme.<br />
<br />
Wiggins (Michael Whelan) began the evening by thanking the following members for their volunteerism in performing a variety of important tasks that had benefited the BSI: Michael Dirda, George McCormack, Irving Kamil, James Saunders, and Donald Terras.  Wiggins also thanked the following for their contributions to the BSI publishing effort: John Bergquist, Steve Rothman, Steve Doyle, Mark Gagen, Randall Stock, and Michael Kean. He also thanked Maggie Schpak for her design of BSI medals.  Mike introduced four attendees who have been members of the BSI for 50 years or more: George McCormack (50 years), <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/04/russell-merritt-interview-oral-history.html">Russell Merritt</a> (51 years), <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a> (52 years), and <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/10/arthur-levine-interview-oral-history.html">Arthur Levine</a> (56 years).  Each of them was presented with a plaque to commemorate the occasion. <br />
<br />
John Bergquist read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Pj Doyle toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Lynn Walker gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  Roy Pilot had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Michael Homer toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Richard Olken led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />

John Linsenmeyer enlightened us about Monsignor Ronald Knox, acknowledging that Knox deserves to be considered the founder of the Grand Game.  Sarah Montague, Andrew Joffe, and Paul Singleton performed an imaginative, and amusing, heavenly meeting between the spirits of Conan Doyle (Joffe) and Dorothy L. Sayers (Montague), interspersed with brief conversations between their famous characters, Sherlock Holmes and Lord Peter Wimsey (Singleton).  James Zych, winner of the BSI essay contest, delivered his paper (see Related Material, below).  Les Klinger presented his interview with Robert Downey, Jr.  Nick Utechin offered a toast to an Old Sherlockian, Ronald Knox, and revealed the very recently discovered details of Knox’s elusive third reading of his paper at Oxford (see Related Material, below). Henry Boote had written Knoxian lyrics to the music of “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” from Annie and, accompanying at the piano, led us in singing this rendition and then in singing the BSI’s anthem, “Aunt Clara.”  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “Standing upon the Terrace” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. <br />
<br />

The dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 156th birthday was held (for the first time) at the Yale Club, with the evening proceeding in (paraphrasing from the <i>Baker Street Journal </i>report) a lofty, plaster-embellished banquet hall, lit by the sort of candelabra under which Henry Baskerville likely found himself.<br />
<br />
The program began with Wiggins (Michael Whelan) presenting an engraved crystal vase to Freda Howlett, the 90 year old “Grand Lady of the International Sherlockian World,” recognizing her as co-founder, honorary member, and past president of The Sherlock Holmes Society of London.  Donald Izban read the Constitution and Buy-Laws, reading the first two Articles in Polish.  Allan Devitt toasted Mrs. Hudson. Walter Jaffee toasted Mycroft Holmes.  Gregory Darak had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Donald Novorsky was to toast Sherlock Holmes but, unfortunately, had a family emergency.   Curtis Armstrong led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />
<br />
Nils Nordberg reported on Holmes’s traveling during “the hiatus,” and proposed that Sherlock Holmes was Norwegian. Hartley Nathan reported on an authentic Penang lawyer that security concerns prevented him from bringing onto the plane in Canada.  Sue Vizoskie discussed what might have happened if Sherlock Holmes had been a woman, and Peter Blau gave a stirring toast to Old Irregular Bill Rabe.  Special guest Ray Jessel, who wrote music and lyrics for the 1965 Broadway musical <i>Baker Street</i>, spoke of the joys and difficulties of composing for Holmes and Watson.  He also performed a few “snippets” from the musical. Leslie Klinger attempted to show a video presentation of a Robert Downey, Jr. interview (in which Downey sent his regards), but was unfortunately thwarted by a Moriarty-masterminded bug in the media’s sound player.  As usual, Henry Boote led the throng in “Aunt Clara.”   Francine Kitts performed a moving <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">“Standing upon the Terrace”</a> ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost.  <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2017/01/autumn-2016-newsletter.html">She graciously took over for Irv Kamil</a>, who had performed this difficult task for many years.<br />
<br />
Nine deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  John Bergquist, Bob Coghill, and Steven T. Doyle were honored with <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Two-Shilling Award</a> for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty. Steven Rothman, John Bergquist, Leslie Klinger, Susan Dahlinger, Glen Miranker, and Gianluca Salvatori received the Editor’s Medal (“Eddies”) in recognition of their services as editors of books and Christmas Annuals published by the BSI.  An Eddy was also given posthumously to Paul Jeffers, who had recently unexpectedly passed “Beyond the Reichenbach.”<br />
<br />
Karen Gurian was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html"><i>The </i>Woman</a>. <br />
<br />
The evening ended with Ben Vizoskie reading Bill Schweickert’s <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">“A Long Evening with Holmes.”</a><br />
<br />
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.  In addition, Ray Jessel performed the song “Finding Words for Spring” from the musical <i>Baker Street</i> as well as a couple of other wonderful songs that he had composed. (See the section on Recordings, below.)<br />

The dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 155th birthday also marked the BSI’s 75th Anniversary. <i>The Baker Street Journal’s</i> correspondent describes “immaculate” proceedings, “splendid” and “occasionally curious” goody bags, and “an orgy of chat and signature-hunting,” which all contribute to “one hectic weekend of frenzied schmoozing at a most literate level.” The account concludes: “The event and the company transcended all.”<br />
<br />
Andrew Fusco read the Constitution and Buy-Laws. Michael Kean toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Barbara Roisman Cooper toasted Mycroft Holmes.  Dana Richards had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Sébastien Le Page toasted to Sherlock Holmes.  Bob Coghill led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />
<br />
Guy Marriott and Nicholas Utechin had some fun kicking off the presentations with a hilarious debate on the Oxford-Cambridge controversy.  Andrew Solberg repeatedly insisted that he was Professor Coram discussing how the outside (and inside) world viewed the BSI.  David Stuart Davies performed a side-splitting one man radio version of “The Red-Headed League.”  Jens Byskov Jensen and Henry Boote (violin and piano respectively) gave us that "Tra-la-la-lira-lira-lay" piece plus a version of Harvey Officer's Baker Street Suite for Violin and Piano. <br />
<br />
Twelve deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Daniel Posnansky was honored with <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Two-Shilling Award </a>for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty, particularly for his work on the BSI Archives.  Yuichi Hirayama, Doug Elliott, Bill Barnes, John Bergquist, Susan Rice, and Nicholas Utechin received the Editor’s Medal in recognition of their services as editors of books and Christmas Annuals published by the BSI. <br />
<br />
Sharon Klinger was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html"><i>The</i> Woman</a>.  Because weather had prevented the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2017/01/the-2008-bsi-dinner.html">2008 recipient</a> from being present to receive said honor, Priscilla Juvelis was feted, as well.<br />
<br />
The evening ended with a masterly reading of Starrett's "221B" by George McCormack.<br />
<br />
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.<br />

The dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 154th birthday was an evening replete with tradition, yet sprinkled with surprises.  This year also marked the 75th anniversary of the publication of Vincent Starrett’s <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i>, and honoring Starrett was a theme of the evening.<br />
<br />
Andrew Fusco read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Warren Randall toasted Mrs. Hudson.  John Bergquist toasted Mycroft Holmes.  Marilyn MacGregor had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Marina Stajic toasted to Sherlock Holmes, featuring the ditty "Sherlock Holmes in Manhattan" accompanied on the piano by Henry Boote.   Sherry Rose-Bond led us in the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.<br />
<br />
From Michael Dirda, we learned that his Investiture namesake, Langdale Pike, was actually Vincent Starrett. Betsy Rosenblatt ripped <i>Naked Is the Best Disguise</i> to bits.  This year’s <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Morley-Montgomery Award</a> winner, Ray Betzner, made a tribute toast to the Old Irregular, Vincent Starrett. <br />
<br />
Seven deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Sherry Rose-Bond was honored with <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Two-Shilling Award </a>"for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty.”  Roy Pilot, Al Rosenblatt, and Christopher and Barbara Roden received the Editor’s Medal.  George McCormack was recognized for attending his 50th consecutive BSI Dinner.<br />
<br />
Priscilla Juvelis was toasted as<i> <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The</a></i><a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html"> Woman</a>.  Unfortunately, weather prevented her from being present to receive said honor. This did not, however, lead to any interruptions in the presentation of impressive women at the Birthday festivities, as Wiggins seamlessly introduced a surprise guest, Heloise Rathbone, the granddaughter of Basil Rathbone from his first marriage.  Ms. Rathbone spoke about her grandfather and what it was like to be part of the Rathbone family.<br />
<br />
The festivities were neatly wrapped up by <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">Bob Thomalen</a>, who read "A Long Evening with Holmes" by the late Bill Schweickert.<br />
<br />
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, attendees saw the New York premiere of <i>The Other Side</i>, a one-act play by Jerome Coopersmith who, more than 40 years before, wrote the book for the musical <i>Baker Street</i>.  <i>The Other Side </i>dealt with the differing approaches to Spiritualism of two prominent couples: Harry and Bess Houdini (portrayed by Paul Singleton and Elyse Locurto) and Jean and Arthur Conan Doyle (played by Mary Ellen Rich and Bob Thomalen).  Michael Pollak introduced the piece, which also featured Kate Karlson as a medium and Dana Richards on sound.  In addition, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.<br />
